Banakil: rules and how to play

بناكل

Banakil is the rummy where twos are wild and the discard pile is a prize. Two packs and two jokers, 18 cards each, and no minimum to open. Every card you lay down scores for you and every card left in your hand counts against you. With four players, partners sit opposite and play into each other's melds on the way to 303.

How to play in one minute

  1. Deal 18 cards each. The next card starts the discard pile and the rest is the stock.
  2. Draw from the stock, or take any card from the discard pile together with every card above it.
  3. Lay down runs (3 to 12 in a row of one suit, from Three up to Ace) and sets of Threes or Aces. Twos and jokers are wild.
  4. Add to your own melds or your partner's. End your turn with a discard, or go out by melding your last card.
  5. Melded cards score for you, cards in hand against you, and going out adds 20. When someone reaches 303, the highest score wins.

The rules

The deal

Two packs and two jokers, 106 cards. Each player gets 18 cards; the next card starts the discard pile and the rest is the stock. The player after the dealer starts. Four players play in two teams with partners opposite, to 303; three play each for themselves to 203, and two to 150.

Melds

  • Run: 3 to 12 cards in a row of one suit, from Three up to Ace (the Ace is high only), with at most one Two and one joker.
  • Set: 3 or 4 Threes, or 3 or 4 Aces, of different suits, with at most one joker and no Twos.
  • Twos and jokers are wild.

Your turn

Draw the top card of the stock, or take from the discard pile: choose any card and take it with every card above it. If you take a single card, you can't discard that card this turn. Then lay down melds in front of you; there is no opening minimum. Once you have a meld down, you may add cards to your own melds or your partner's, and swap a joker in one of those runs for the natural card it stands for, as long as the joker goes back into a meld that same turn. End your turn by discarding one card, or go out by melding or adding your last card.

Scoring

  • Melded cards count for you and cards left in hand count against you: 3 to 6 half a point, 7 to King 1, Ace 1.5, Two 2, joker 4.
  • Cards you add to your partner's melds count for your partner, and partners add their two scores together.
  • Going out adds 20. Going out in one turn that began with no melds on the table at all scores a flat 40 instead.
  • A player who never laid a meld scores a flat -20.
  • If you must draw and the stock is empty, the hand ends at once with nobody going out. When someone reaches the target the highest score wins; a tie at the top plays another hand.
Example

You go out with 15 points melded: 15 + 20 = 35. A rival with 8 melded who still holds an Ace and a joker scores 8 - 5.5 = 2.5.

Tips from the table

  • The discard pile is the big prize: a deep pickup can hand you a run in one turn, but every card you don't meld counts against you.
  • A Two costs 2 and a joker 4 if they are still in your hand at the end. Get your wild cards into melds.
  • There is no minimum to open, so get a meld down early: until you do, you can't add to anything, and a hand with no meld scores -20.
  • When your own melds are done, feed your partner's: those cards score for your team.

Questions

What does it mean that twos are wild in Banakil?

A Two can stand in for a card in a run, like a joker. A run may hold at most one Two and one joker, and sets of Threes or Aces can't use a Two at all.

Can you take the whole discard pile in Banakil?

You can take any card from the discard pile, together with every card above it. If you take only one card, you can't throw it back that same turn.

How many points is a game of Banakil?

303 with four players in teams, 203 with three and 150 with two. When someone reaches it, the highest score wins.
