Baloot calculator and score sheet

Keep the Baloot score without paper. Add each hand's points for us and them, watch the totals race to 152, and undo a mistake with one tap. Not sure what a hand is worth? Count it here: choose Sun or Hokom and the buyer, enter your card points, the projects, Baloot and any double, and the calculator gives the game points the way the Qahwa app scores them. Everything stays on this phone and keeps working without internet.

The calculator needs JavaScript switched on. The scoring rules are all explained below.

How the scoring works

How a Baloot hand is scored

A hand is worth 26 game points in Sun and 16 in Hokom. Card points: in Sun and in plain suits the ace is 11, the ten 10, the king 4, the queen 3 and the jack 2. In Hokom the trump jack is 20 and the trump nine 14, then ace 11, ten 10, king 4 and queen 3. The last trick adds 10, so a Sun hand holds 130 card points and a Hokom hand 162.

The buyers must collect more than the defenders, counting their tricks, the projects they are awarded and Baloot. A tie fails.

  • Made, no double: the defenders' card points become game points. In Hokom, round to the nearest ten (a 5 rounds down) and divide by 10. In Sun, round to the nearest ten unless the last digit is 5, then divide by 5: 64 is 12, 65 is 13 and 66 is 14. The buyers get the rest of the 26 or 16.
  • Khasara (the buyers fail): the defenders take all 26 or 16, plus every awarded project.
  • Kaboot: the team that takes all eight tricks scores 44 in Sun or 25 in Hokom, plus its projects; the other team scores nothing.

Projects, Baloot and doubling

  • Sira (three in a row of one suit): 4 in Sun, 2 in Hokom. Fifty (four in a row): 10 and 5. Hundred (five or more in a row, or four tens, jacks, queens or kings): 20 and 10. Four aces in Sun are the 400, worth 40; in Hokom they count as a Hundred.
  • Only the team with the best project scores, with all of its projects. Enter the projects of both teams: the calculator gives them to the team with the highest one, and asks who won when the best projects are equal.
  • Baloot (king and queen of trump in one hand, Hokom only) gives its owner 2 points, even when the contract fails, and is never doubled.
  • Doubling: Double x2, Three x3, Four x4, then Gahwa. A doubled hand is winner-takes-all: the team that wins the contract scores 26 or 16 times the level, and projects count double at most. Sun can only be doubled once. Whoever wins a Gahwa hand wins the match at once.

Using the score sheet

Type a hand's points for us and them and tap Add, or count the hand with the helper and add it from there. The first team to 152 wins; if both teams pass 152, the higher total wins, and equal totals play another hand. You can switch the target to 100 or 200, as in the app, undo the last hand or clear the sheet. The sheet is saved on this device only.

Questions

How do you calculate Baloot points?

Count the card points each team took, with 10 for the last trick. If the buyers have more, the defenders' card points become game points (divided by 10 in Hokom or by 5 in Sun, with the rounding above) and the buyers get the rest of 16 or 26. Then add the projects and Baloot. The helper on this page does it for you.

Why do you play Baloot to 152?

152 game points is the usual target: the first team to reach it wins the match. The Qahwa app also offers 100 and 200, and this sheet lets you pick the same targets.

What happens on a tie in Baloot?

In a hand, equal points mean the buyers fail. At the end of a match, if both teams are on the same score past the target, you play another hand.

How much is a Kaboot?

44 game points in Sun and 25 in Hokom, plus the sweeping team's projects, times any double. The other team scores nothing, except that Baloot still pays its owner 2.

Does the calculator need internet?

No. Once the page has loaded it works offline, and your sheet stays on your phone until you clear it.
